IRAP stands for Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein, and is an exciting new product used for the treatment of osteoarthritis and joint injuries in horses. IRAP is specially formulated to counteract the action of inflammatory proteins in the joint that can cause discomfort and injury to the horse, and can be used to improve lameness in already affected animals.

A large syringe of blood is collected by your vet, and then incubated in our lab for 24 hours, after which the sample is processed and the plasma is drawn off into individual smaller syringes ready for sterile injection into the affected joint. Your vet will decide on the frequency and length of treatment best for your horse, and you should hope to see an improvement after a couple of administrations and a rest period.

If you’d like to speak to someone regarding this treatment, please don’t hesitate to call our office and ask for a vet to discuss whether IRAP is right for your horse, and the options available.
